LANZHOU, March 2 (Xinhua) -- A research team led by Lanzhou University in northwest China has developed a high-performance energy module for implants that can biodegrade and be bioabsorbed in an animal body.

The new supercapacitor is thin, lightweight and mechanically flexible, and can dissolve completely, eliminating the need for surgical removal, according to the joint research team from Lanzhou University and the University of Houston.

The results of the team's research were published on the journal Science Advances.

In experiments, the devices were implanted under the skin of rats, and then completely degraded, thus demonstrating the potential for further medical uses, said Lan Wei, head of the research group from the School of Physical Science and Technology, Lanzhou University.

The lack of a proper implantable power source has posed challenges to the development of implantable medical electronics, such as pacemakers.

The team will continue conducting experiments to provide more evidence for the capacitor's future applications in humans, according to Lan. Enditem
