NEW DELHI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- A dense blanket of fog enveloped Delhi and its surrounding places on Saturday morning, leading to very low visibility.

At least four flights to and from Delhi airport were delayed and one flight was cancelled due to the dense fog leading to poor visibility.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that zero visibility was reported over most parts of Delhi, Lucknow - the capital city of northern state of Uttar Pradesh, and Amritsar - a city in northern state of Punjab, due to variable and calm lower-level winds.

"Similar fog conditions are likely in the morning of January 17 as well. Visibility is likely to improve from January 18," added IMD in its statement.

Office goers had a tough time in driving through the dense fog. As a result, most of them reached their offices later than the normal reporting time. "Officially I am supposed to report to my work place at 8:00 a.m., but today due to the dense fog I reached at around 8:25 a.m.," said a lady school teacher who works in the national capital.

Delhi's international airport also informed the flyers about possible flight delays. "Low visibility procedures continue to remain implemented at Delhi Airport. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information. Any inconvenience caused is regretted," tweeted the Delhi Airport.

Earlier, in another tweet, it said that due to dense fog only the CAT-IIIA and CAT-IIIB compliant aircraft and pilots are able to operate. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated information. Enditem
