India's COVID-19 tally rises to 10,581,837 with 10,064 new cases

NEW DELHI, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 10,581,837 on Tuesday as 10,064 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, said the latest data from the health ministry.

According to the official data, the death toll mounted to 152,556 as 137 COVID-19 patients died since Monday morning.

There are still 200,528 active cases in the country, while 10,228,753 people have been discharged so far from hospitals after medical treatment.

India kicked off the nationwide vaccination drive last Saturday, a major step in the country's fight against the pandemic.

As many as 187,802,827 tests have been conducted in India till Monday, out of which 709,791 tests were conducted on Monday alone, said the latest data issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Tuesday.

The national capital Delhi, one of the most COVID-19 affected places in the country, has been witnessing comparatively lower number of cases over the past couple of weeks. As many as 161 new cases and eight deaths were registered in the city through Monday.

The national capital recorded only four deaths last Thursday, the lowest number of deaths since May 11, 2020.

So far 10,754 people have died in the national capital due to COVID-19, confirmed the Delhi's health department.

With the vaccination drive underway, two types of vaccines are being administered to people in India. While the Covishield vaccine made by the Serum Institute of India (SII) was supplied to all states, the Covaxin vaccine made by the Bharat Biotech International Limited was supplied to only 12 states.
