LUSAKA, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government said on Tuesday that it was revising the COVID-19 testing strategy which will involve coming with criteria on who should be tested.

Minister of Health Jonas Chanda said the revision of the testing strategy has been necessitated by the increase in case numbers, the geographical spread of the pandemic, generalized community spread and the resultant increased laboratory turnaround.

"This will result in prioritizing testing for those among us who need it the most, to ensure they are accorded the necessary health attention," he said in a release.

The government, he said, was making great efforts to fight the pandemic in order to ensure the physical, mental and social well-being of every individual.

Meanwhile, the country recorded 1,308 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative cases to 39,515. The country also lost 19 people during the same period, bringing the total deaths to 578. Enditem
