MADRID, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Figures published by Spain's Ministry of Health on Monday showed a significant drop in the number of new COVID-19 cases, indicating that the third coronavirus wave has already peaked in the country.

According to the ministry, 47,095 new infections were recorded in the 72 hours between noontime Friday and 2 p.m. on Monday.

The respective figures recorded in the same period a week earlier was 79,686, and two weeks earlier, 93,822.

Spain has registered 2,989,085 coronavirus infections since the start of the pandemic.

A further 909 deaths were also reported over the weekend, bringing the total number of victims to 62,795.

The cumulative incidence over the previous 14 days has also fallen from 750.70 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Friday to 667.87 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Monday.

Despite the fall in the number of new cases, Fernando Simon, director of the Coordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies of the Ministry of Health, warned that "it would be dangerous" to assume that Spain was "at a low level of risk."

"All of the (17) autonomous communities except the Canary Islands remain in a high level of risk and the impact of that is still being seen in our intensive care units," he said, adding that 43.16 percent of intensive care their beds are currently occupied by COVID-19 patients (0.7 percent less than on Friday).

Simon also said that to date over 450 cases of the more contagious variant of the coronavirus that first identified in United Kingdom have been detected in Spain. Enditem
