DAMASCUS, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli strikes after midnight have destroyed a weapon depot and killed three fighters in the vicinity of Syrian capital Damascus, a war monitor reported on Thursday.

The fresh Israeli strikes targeted a military depot believed to be used by Iranian-backed militia near Damascus, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The UK-based watchdog group said that the destroyed weapon depot is believed to have been used by the Lebanese Hezbollah group.

It noted that the targeted site is located in the Dimas area in the countryside of Damascus.

However, the observatory said it wasn't clear yet whether the slain fighters were Lebanese or not, while the death toll could likely rise due to the number of wounded fighters.

The state news agency SANA said that four soldiers were wounded by the Israeli attack, which left "damage."

Citing a military source, SANA said the Israeli attack was launched by Israeli warplanes from over Lebanon on sites in the vicinity of Damascus. It added that the Syrian air defenses responded to the attack, destroying most of the missiles.

Residents in the capital watched the air defenses' firing while tracing the Israeli targets in the sky amid the sound of explosions.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria over the pretext that it's destroying Iranian targets. Enditem
