RIGA, May 11 (Xinhua) -- An offshore wind farm, which Latvia and Estonia are planning to develop together in the Baltic Sea, might be put into operation in 2030, said the Latvian Economics Ministry on Tuesday.
Last fall, Latvian Economics Minister Janis Vitenbergs and Estonian Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Taavi Aas signed a memorandum of understanding on a joint offshore wind farm project for generation of renewable energy.
The Latvian Economics Ministry said that the project has been named Elwind, and the next step would involve drafting a detailed work schedule and securing co-funding from the Connect Europe Facility (CEF).
In 2021, the developers plan to choose the location for the wind farm in the Gulf of Riga and start evaluating the project's environmental impact.
According to its National Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030, Latvia aims to increase its installed wind energy capacity from roughly 70 MW to 800 MW.
From 2025 to 2026, an auction will be held to pick one or several companies that will implement the Elwind project. The project is scheduled for completion in 2030. Enditem
