Hong Kong's COVID-19 tally surpasses 11,000 with vaccine rollout going on

HONG KONG, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- With 22 new infections Sunday, Hong Kong has so far reported 11,005 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and the government is speeding up its mass vaccination program.

Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection said Sunday the new infections included 17 locally-transmitted cases, with four untraceable, and there were also over 10 preliminary cases at a press briefing.

Of all, ten new confirmed patients were related to a restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui, where 44 cases have been reported so far.

According to Hong Kong's Hospital Authority, 218 COVID-19 patients are currently hospitalized, of which 17 are in critical condition.

More than 13,600 residents have received the first jab of Sinovac Biotech's vaccine and some 70,000 people have booked online after the government started the first phase of its vaccination program with people including medical workers and the aged given the priority.

The government will add another 200,000 slots to the online booking system on Monday.

A total of 585,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Fosun Pharma and BioNTech were delivered to Hong Kong on Saturday and could be administered soon. Enditem
