KUALA LUMPUR, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian shuttlers have been cleared to participate in the Asian leg of the BWF Tour in Bangkok, Thailand despite one of the officials was tested positive for COVID-19 before departure, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) said on Sunday.

Among the 39 coaches and shuttlers from the Malaysia team screened for COVID-19 prior to their departure, BAM coaching director and retired shuttler Wong Choong Hann was tested positive while the results for the others came back negative, BAM said in a statement.

Wong is currently asymptomatic and is observing self-isolation, the statement said.

Despite Wong's result, the rest of the team has been cleared to depart for Bangkok as scheduled on Monday after consulting relevant government agencies, BAM said.

The Malaysian team is set to observe a period of quarantine until Jan. 11 as per the tournament requirement. The Malaysian players, coaches and officials will undergo approximately five to seven swab tests during their stay in Thailand, according to the statement.

The Asian leg will comprise the Thailand Open from Jan. 12-17 and from Jan. 19-24 and the 2020 BWF World Tour Finals from Jan. 27-31.
