TOKYO, April 10 (Xinhua) -- The FINA Diving World Cup, one of the most important test events for the Tokyo Olympic Games, has been rescheduled for May 1-6.
Tokyo 2020 organizers and FINA, the swimming's world governing body, announced late Friday night that the competition will "take place in Tokyo as originally planned", and will serve as "both a qualification and test event for the Olympic Games."
"This decision follows confirmation of the detailed procedures for entry and local hosting arrangements in place for the event in Japan during the month of May for all delegations taking part in the event," read a statement.
A decision on the artistic swimming Olympic qualification tournament, originally planned to take place from May 1-4 in Tokyo but canceled by FINA last week, will be made in the days to come but the marathon swim Olympic qualifier, originally due to be held in Fukuoka, Japan, on May 29-30, will be moved to in Setubal, Portugal on June 19-20.
FINA had announced last week that the diving competition, also an Olympic qualifying event, would not take place citing a lack of enough countermeasures against COVID-19 and Japanese embassies' failing to process visa applications for participants on time.
Tokyo 2020 organizing committee said it filed a written protest to FINA because it announced the "cancellation" of the three events without advance consultation with the host. Enditem
