KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 (Xinhua) -- The qualification process of badminton for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games has come to an early closure as no more tournaments will be played inside the qualifying window due mid-June, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) said on Friday.
While the qualification period officially closes June 15 as per the qualification system, the current rankings list will not change, as there are no additional opportunities for players to earn points, the world governing body of badminton said in a statement.
"However, we still need to receive confirmations from national Olympic committees and member associations, followed by any possible reallocations, and this will take a number of weeks to complete," BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund said.
BWF's announcement came after the resurgence of COVID-19 pandemic had led to the postponement of the Malaysian Open and the cancellation of Singapore Open, which were the last two events within the qualification window. Enditem
