NEW DELHI, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- India's top leadership congratulated the country's female shuttler P.V. Sindhu for winning a bronze medal at Tokyo 2020, defeating China's He Bingjiao 21-13, 21-15.
Sindhu, a silver medalist at Rio 2016, has become the first Indian female athlete to win two Olympic medals in two successive Games.
Indian president Ram Nath Kovind congratulated her on achieving the feat. "P.V. Sindhu becomes the first Indian woman to win medals in two Olympic Games. She has set a new yardstick of consistency, dedication and excellence. My heartiest congratulations to her for bringing glory to India."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also hailed Sindhu's stellar performance. "We are all elated by the stellar performance by P.V. Sindhu. Congratulations to her on winning bronze at the Tokyo Olympics. She is India's pride and one of our most outstanding Olympians."
The country's sports minister Anurag Thakur also congratulated the female shuttler. "Sindhu played in a dominating way today and won a bronze medal. It is good to see that girls are winning Olympic medals for India."
