NAIROBI, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Three athletes from Guatemala are the latest overseas competitors to arrive in Kenya for next week's Nairobi 2021 World Under 20 (WU20) Championships.
Glendy Teletor, Bryan Matias, and Mariandree Chacon arrived in the Kenyan capital on Thursday night ahead of the event that runs from Tuesday to Sunday. Teletor and Matias will compete in race walking, while Chacon is a sprinter and will compete in both 100m and 200m.
The race walkers are coached by 21-year-old Carlos Ortiz, a bronze medalist from the Tampere 2018 WU20 in Finland. "We shall hit the ground running immediately so that the athletes can acclimatize and maintain their form and shape. Our target is to win medals," Ortiz added.
The Central American country located south of Mexico became the second country to send a delegation to Kenya after Poland, whose contingent arrived in two batches earlier this week.
Eight more countries including Canada, France, Algeria, Argentina, Botswana, Czech Republic, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic are expected to arrive before Saturday.
Over 100 countries and 1,462 athletes are expected to compete behind closed doors at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in the outskirts of the Kenyan capital. Enditem
