LUSAKA, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Zambia on Tuesday joined the rest of the world in commemorating the World AIDS Day with President Edgar Lungu pledging his government's commitment to ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2030.

The Zambian leader said this was premised on the government's program of ensuring universal health coverage which includes ending HIV/AIDS by 2030.

The Zambian leader, in remarks delivered on his behalf by Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya, however, noted that this could only be attained if everyone took responsibility and ownership of their health.

The Zambian president said the theme was timely and places responsibility on governments to do more to tackle the disease.

Zambia has attained the 90-90-90 target of attaining HIV epidemic control. The Zambian leader said this means that 90 percent of the country's population know their HIV status while 90 percent of those living with HIV are on antiretroviral therapy and 90 percent of those on treatment have reached viral load suppression.
