KABUL, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- A local reporter was shot and killed in Afghanistan's eastern Ghazni province on Monday, local police confirmed.

Freelance journalist and chairman of Provincial Journalists Association Ramatullah Nikzad was shot by an assailant holding a silenced pistol near his house in Khwaja Hakim, an area in provincial capital Ghazni city on Monday evening, Ahmad Khan Sirt from Ghazni police told Xinhua.

An investigation was initiated into the case, the police official added.

The shooting came hours after a civilian and an assailant were killed in a suicide bomb explosion in the country's capital Kabul.

The bomber tried to assault a religious gathering in a local mosque in Paghman district on western outskirts of Kabul, the capital police confirmed in a statement.

Over the past years, the capital city with a population of nearly 5 million has been hit by series of terror attacks by the Taliban insurgents and militants of the Islamic State (IS) opposing the government.

On Sunday, 10 people were killed and over 50 wounded in a bomb explosion targeting a national parliament member's convoy in a populated area in western Kabul. Enditem
