UNHCR chief says to finance aid programs in countries hosting Syrian refugees
BEIRUT, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi said on Thursday that the agency is coordinating with the World Bank to finance aid programs for countries hosting Syrian refugees, a statement by Lebanon's Presidency reported.
Grandi made his remarks during his meeting with Lebanese President Michel Aoun.
He vowed to exert more efforts to create the right atmosphere for the safe return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.
Aoun told Grandi that Lebanon has been suffering from the negative repercussions of the flow of over 1 million Syrian refugees to the country following the eruption of the civil war in neighboring Syria.
"It is impossible for Lebanon to continue bearing the burden of the Syrian exodus," the president said.
More than 1 million Syrian refugees are registered with the UNHCR in Lebanon, while the Lebanese government estimated the true number of Syrians in the country at 1.5 million. Enditem
